Best Surf Season (December - March)

Nago is a fickle, west-facing setup in Papua New Guinea that does not fire like an open-ocean swell magnet. The best chance for real size and power comes during the northwest monsoon from December through March, when average surf heights reach 4ft (1.3m) and wave periods sit in the powerful 10.0-10.5 second range. The swell direction is still dominated by NNE/NE energy, but the north and NNW component becomes more present, giving Nago more push than any other time of year. The major trade-off is wind: ideal offshore flow from the east and southeast only occurs 23-33 percent of the time, while west and northwest winds blow onshore a large percentage of the month. When an E-SE offshore lines up with a long-period north pulse, Nago can produce clean, punchy, head-high waves, but you have to work for those windows.
