Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months at Pedra Branca are when the North Atlantic truly delivers. Deep low-pressure systems march across the Atlantic, generating powerful long-period swells from the west-northwest to northwest that wrap into the west-facing coastline. With average wave heights consistently over 2 meters and periods exceeding 12 seconds, this is when the spot sees its most consistent and heaviest surf. Additionally, the frequency of offshore winds from the western quadrant (WNW through SW) is at its highest, reaching 25-26% in December and January, providing more opportunities for glassy conditions. The combination of strong swell and favorable winds makes this the prime window for serious surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

During the transition months of April and September, the North Atlantic starts to shift gears. In April, the storm track begins to weaken but still delivers occasional moderate swell (average 2.0m) with decent period (11.1s). Offshore wind frequency drops to around 13%, so the windows of good conditions become more sporadic. September sees the first hints of autumn as the Azores High begins to retreat, allowing early-season low-pressure systems to send more organized swell (1.6m, 10.5s) with a 14% chance of favorable winds. Expect fun, clean waves on the right days, but with less consistency than winter.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are the quietest time of year at Pedra Branca. The Azores High dominates the weather pattern, bringing strong, steady northerly winds that blow predominantly onshore or side-onshore for this west-facing beach. Offshore winds from the west are extremely rare, dropping to as low as 3% in July. Swell heights fall to 1.4-1.7m on average, with short periods (8.5-9.9s) that produce weaker, more disorganized waves. While the occasional very small, groveling day can be fun for longboarders or beginners, overall wave quality is poor. This is a time to look elsewhere or relegate yourself to the coziest beach break corners if the wind clocks around to the west.
