Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic storm track fires up from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swells to Ribeira d'Ilhas. Average wave heights climb to a solid 2.0m to 2.6m range, with periods stretching from 11.4s to 13.0s – that is prime long-period, high-energy groundswell. While the dominant swell directions come from the NW and NNW quadrants (which are slightly north of the spot's optimal WSW exposure), plenty of W, WSW, and WNW energy sneaks in to keep the lineup pumping. The wind statistics show ideal (offshore) conditions from the west (NO, ONO, O, OSO) 23% to 27% of the time, often during post-frontal high-pressure setups. When the stars align – a juicy low-pressure system in the Atlantic, a clean westerly breeze, and a long fetch – Ribeira d'Ilhas delivers world-class, hollow walls and rippable peaks.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transitional periods. In April, the average swell drops to 2.0m at 11.1s, and ideal wind frequency falls to 19%. The predominant NW-NNW swell still provides decent background waves, but the power is waning. September sees a similar average height (1.6m) but a slightly longer period (10.5s) and an improved 23% ideal wind window, thanks to the first early-season storms brushing the coast. Both months offer fun, punchy session with occasional clean days – ideal for groveling on smaller boards when the conditions line up.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic shift. From May through August, the average swell height dwindles to 1.4m–1.7m, and wave periods drop to a marginal 8.5s–9.9s – mostly short-period, windswell-like energy. The dominant swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NNW (up to 54% in July!), which is far off the spot's optimal west-to-southwest window. Additionally, the wind is ideal only 10%–15% of the time, with strong northerly winds (N and NNW) often creating choppy, onshore conditions. When the daily north wind does clock around to a light westerly, the wave quality improves, but the lack of size and period makes it a tough window for anything beyond a fun-sized, groveling session.
