Today's Surf Conditions at El Silencio
Spot Overview & Description
Nestled within a secluded cove, El Silencio offers a mellow, low-key vibe that appeals to those in the know. The blend of rocky reef and sandy bottom creates a unique surfing canvas, where the rights peel over boulders with a sucky takeoff before fattening up on the shoulder and closing out on the sandier inside. These right-handers come to life under moderate South swell, but the magic truly happens when a West-Northwest groundswell fills in around 3 feet (0.9m). A solid Northwest swell direction is the key, and the break works best with a mid tide and a gentle Northeast wind. Lefts occasionally form at the southern end, rewarding patience with a different line. The crowd stays thin here—even summer beachgoers tend to flock to better-known spots nearby—so intermediate surfers can enjoy plenty of waves without the jostle. Keep an eye out for exposed rocks at low tide and the urchins that lurk among the boulders; a reef bootie goes a long way. After the session, the surrounding area serves up excellent dining options, making El Silencio a true hideaway for a full day of surf and relaxation.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (February - April)
El Silencio is never an easy wave, but the late austral summer and early autumn offer the best blend of size and clean windows. During February and March, ideal wind percentages climb to 6% and 8% respectively - the highest of the whole year - while the average swell sits at 4-5ft (1.5-1.6m) with long 13.1-13.5s periods. The South Pacific low-pressure belt begins to ease, but there is still enough energy in the water to make the SSW/SW groundswell wrap into the exposed southwest-facing beach. When a NE/E land breeze develops, the result is punchy, rippable waves before the onshore southerlies kick in.
