Best Surf Season (April - May)

This is the money window at Punta Huanchaco. The South Pacific storm track is fully active during the austral autumn, and the average swell height climbs to 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) with average periods of 13.4-13.5s. More importantly, the wind statistic for clean, offshore conditions peaks at 43-44 percent, the cleanest window of the year. SSW and S swells dominate the directional rose, but they arrive with enough period and west in the direction to wrap into this west-facing beach and produce grinding, rippable peaks.

Fair Surf Season (March & June - September)

March is the entry ramp, with average swell building to 1.5m (4.9ft) and ideal wind conditions 37 percent of the time. From June through September, the average height ties the annual peak at 1.8m (5.9ft) and the period stays in the 12.7-13.1s range, meaning powerful long-period groundswell is still frequent. The limiting factor is wind: ideal conditions fall from 37 percent in June to just 26 percent in September as the S/SSW flow strengthens. Expect bigger, more powerful surf but a higher percentage of textured, sideshore days. Dawn patrol, a good wetsuit, and a patient eye on the local wind forecast turn these months into hidden-gem sessions.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

The last quarter and early summer make up the quiet season at Punta Huanchaco. October sees average size drop to 1.6m (5.2ft) and ideal wind to just 23 percent, then November through February averages hover around 1.3-1.5m (4.3-4.9ft) with periods of 12.1-12.7s. The dominant SSW swell is still present, but it is less consistent and less powerful, and the wind quality rarely lines up. Offshore E/SE flow is a scarce commodity, with ideal conditions only 23-26 percent of the time. The west-facing point becomes a smaller, fun-sized playground when a stray Southern Ocean pulse meets a glassy morning.
