The winter storm track is now fully active in the South Pacific, and the wave rose shows 69.6 percent SSW and 26.3 percent S, meaning the point is seeing both classic SSW groundswell and more direct south swell. Nearly 41 percent of readings are in the 1.5-2m range and 15.1 percent are in the 2-2.5m class. When a strong low pressure system passes, Punta Huanchaco can easily deliver heavy sets in the 6-8ft range.

The catch is wind. Ideal wind drops to 37 percent, and the pressure gradient tightens in winter, strengthening the S/SSW wind flow to 85.4 percent combined. Those side-shore to slightly onshore winds can put a bump on the face, particularly after midday. Still, early mornings are often glassy, and 1.8m of long-period SSW groundswell ensures plenty of corners. Water temperature slips to 18.4°C, and rainfall is nearly nonexistent at 0.05 mm/day, keeping the desert air dry and skies clear.
