January: The Calm Before the Align

January sits on the doorstep of Peru's best season, but the surf is still caught under a persistent southerly breeze. Average swell height runs a fun-sized 4-5ft (1.4m) with a powerful 13.0-second period - a sign that the South Pacific is already grumbling. The wave rose is heavily loaded from the SSW, which delivers 71 percent of the total swell energy, while SW adds another 27 percent. Most waves fall in the rippable 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range, with head-high sets in the 1.5-2m (5-7ft) class making up over a quarter of the observations. The long period means the WSW-facing beach will still see clean, lined-up waves when the wind cooperates. That is the catch: the 'ideal' offshore window from the E/NE is only 4 percent. S, SSW, and SW winds make up the overwhelming majority of the wind rose, and even at light speeds they put ripples on the faces. Water temperature sits at a mild 19.0°C (66°F), air temps reach 26°C at the warmest, and rainfall is negligible. Expect fun, punchy surf with occasional morning windows - not yet the full Senoritas experience.
