Best Surf Season (June - September)

When the southwest monsoon, or Habagat, ramps up during summer, Poro Point comes alive. Between June and September, the South China Sea is charged with waves from the SSW to W quadrants - exactly the directions this southwest-facing beach is exposed to. Average swell heights climb to 0.6-0.9m (2-3ft) with periods of 6.5-7.2s, and the region occasionally feels heavier, longer-period pulses from low-pressure systems developing off the coast of Vietnam. However, there is a catch: the same monsoon also drags in a relentless onshore wind from the SSW, SW and WSW. Only 6-15% of the time does the wind blow offshore from the NNE-E quadrants, so you must be ruthless with your timing. The true gems appear during the early morning calms, when a light land breeze creates glassy surfaces on the otherwise lumpy swell. This is the season of dawn patrol and short, punchy peaks; expect rippable waves when you find the right wind and tide.
