Playa Boca Chica sits just a stone's throw from Acapulco, offering a mellow alternative for surfers rolling into the region before the more storied breaks come into view. This beachbreak exudes a relaxed, unpretentious vibe and welcomes a wide spectrum of ability—beginners especially will find a forgiving canvas to sharpen their skills. Consistency is a highlight here, with rideable waves nearly year-round, so if you’re passing through, it’s well worth a paddle-out. The break handles swell from about 2 feet and up, performing best when southerly energy rolls in, though occasional northwesterly pulses can also conjure playful peaks. Waves peel both left and right, adding variety to each session. For optimal conditions, look for northeast winds, and don’t sweat the tide—low, mid, or high can all produce, giving you flexibility depending on the day. While it may not deliver the epic, heavy barrels of nearby heavy hitters like Caca’s Point, Playa Boca Chica delivers a solid, user-friendly session that makes the most of whatever the ocean offers. Pack your board, soak in the laid-back atmosphere, and enjoy the ride.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October – March)

The heart of the winter season delivers the most consistent combination of quality swell and favourable offshore winds. As the North Pacific storm track intensifies, long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW window pour into the south-facing beach, averaging 1.0–1.3m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds. The dominant high-pressure systems over the continental US and northern Mexico drive a steady stream of light to moderate offshore airflow from the N, NNE, NE, and NNW, grooming the waves to perfection. This is when Playa Boca Chica truly shines – smooth, peeling rights and lefts, with plenty of punch and clean faces for carving.

Fair Surf Season (July – September)

During the heart of summer, the swell source shifts. The northern hemisphere storm track weakens, but distant Southern Ocean storms and early-season tropical activity in the Eastern Pacific send pulses of SSW and SW swell at 1.4–1.6m with excellent 13–14 second periods. The catch? The wind regime becomes more fickle. Light onshore breezes from the SW and WSW creep in about half the time, introducing a crumbly texture to the surface. Still, when a high-pressure ridge builds in from the north and delivers those crucial offshore flows, the waves turn clean and powerful. It’s a window of opportunity for the patient surfer.

Low Surf Season (April – June)

Autumn and early winter – April through June – represent the slump in both swell size and wind consistency. The average swell height still reaches 1.4–1.6m due to lingering Southern Ocean swells, but the wind becomes the limiting factor. Offshore wind frequencies drop to just 41–46%, meaning most days feature onshore or cross-shore flow from the S through WSW quadrants. The waves, while not small, are often chopped up and lack the clean, lined-up quality that makes this beach break. It’s the trade-off season: you may score a fun session if a cold front pushes through, but expect plenty of marginal conditions.
