Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machine powers up from October through March, delivering consistent, high-quality surf to this iconic crescent-shaped beach. During these months, frequent deep low-pressure systems track across the Atlantic, generating long-period WNW to NW swells that wrap perfectly into the bay. With an average wave height of 1.6–2.1m and periods of 11–13s, the surf is consistently pumping to firing. The offshore window from S, SSW, and SW is most reliable, especially under the influence of high pressure over the Iberian Peninsula, which combines with the thermal low to produce clean, glassy mornings. This is prime time for La Concha's best waves.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The transition months of April, May, and September offer a mix of leftover winter swell and early autumn pulses. Swell heights average 1.2–1.5m with periods dipping to 9–11s, yielding fun-sized to solid waves on the better days. The wind is more variable: the offshore pattern weakens as the Azores High builds and shifts north, bringing more NE and E winds that are side-shore or light onshore. While consistency drops, there are still plenty of rideable sessions, especially when a late-season storm or early autumn low lines up with a southerly breeze.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at La Concha is defined by small, weak swell and challenging wind conditions. The average wave height hovers around 1.0m with periods under 9s, meaning mostly micro to small, mushy surf. The dominant swell direction remains NW, but the energy is low and often contaminated by strong thermal onshore winds from the NW and N. The offshore wind window is narrow, with ideal directions occurring only about 20–25% of the time. During summer, your best bet is an early dawn patrol before the sea breeze kicks in, or a southerly wind event that cleans up the small swell. It's a good time for longboarding or a holiday swim, but expectations should be tempered.
