Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of winter brings a subtle but crucial shift in the wind regime to Playa Mar Verde. As the North Atlantic high-pressure system strengthens, it pumps cooler, drier air from the north across Cuba, creating offshore flow for this south-facing beach. While the swell window remains dominated by long-fetch E-ESE energy – not ideal for direct exposure – these shorter-period waves (6-7s) are groomed into clean, waist-to-shoulder high lines. Averaging 0.8m, the surf is more 'fun-sized' than pumping, but the combination of lighter winds and occasional S-SSW pulses from weak cold fronts can deliver punchy, rideable waves. December and January are the prime windows, with ideal wind percentages hovering near 55-59%.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

As spring progresses, the pressure gradient relaxes and the northeast trade winds become more established. This brings a slight uptick in ESE-SE swell (April sees 35% from the SE), but the wind quality degrades. Offshore flow from the north becomes less frequent, replaced by side-shore easterlies that introduce texture to the wave face. Periods remain short – averaging 6.3-6.7s – keeping the surf small and grovelly. While there are occasional mornings with light north wind, the overall consistency of quality drops. Expect smaller days with fewer clean sessions, though the water warms and crowds thin.

Low Surf Season (July - October)

Summer and early autumn are the quietest months for surf at Playa Mar Verde. The trade wind belt dominates, with persistent easterly to southeasterly winds blowing onshore or side-shore across the beach. Swell direction is almost exclusively from the E-ESE-SE quadrant, with zero contribution from the optimal southern quadrant. Wave heights drop below 0.6m in September and October, while wave periods linger around 6s – creating messy, chop-filled conditions. The wind is ideal for surfing only 29-30% of the time during this period, mostly during brief lulls in the trade wind regime. Occasional distant hurricanes can send long-period south swell, but those events are rare and often accompanied by stormy winds. For the average surfer, this is a time to explore other pursuits.
