Playa Negra, tucked along the Caribbean coast of Limon, is a rugged, black-sand beauty that offers a welcome escape from the region’s more crowded lineups. The beach stretches for miles, framed by lush, wild scenery and the unmistakable dark volcanic sand that gives the spot its name. While it’s best known for its national park and raw natural charm, Playa Negra can deliver surprisingly fun surf when the conditions align. The waves here are largely beginner-friendly, rolling in on a NorthEast swell. The beach break starts to work with swell as small as 1ft (0.3m) and improves as the energy builds. Both left and right waves form off the sandbars, offering variety for surfers of different stances. The tide window is wide—low to high can both produce rideable waves—but the most consistent shape tends to come with a SouthWest wind, which cleans up the surface nicely. For those looking to ditch the handful of locals and soak in solitude, wandering north along the endless black sand will lead to even less crowded peaks. Just keep an eye out for occasional sharp reef patches lurking near the shore. Playa Negra may not be a world-class reef pass, but for a mellow, uncrowded session in a stunning setting, it holds its own.

Best Surf Season (December - March)
The North Pacific winter machine kicks into high gear from December through March, delivering a steady diet of ENE groundswell to Playa Negra's exposed shoreline. Average swell heights hover in the 1.2 to 1.4 metre range with periods around 8.4 seconds, which translates to punchy, rippable waves that hold up well on the beach break. More importantly, this is the window when offshore wind frequency peaks at 43–45% — thanks to a climatological strengthening of the pressure gradient between the stable North Pacific High and low pressure troughs swinging through Central America. When the wind aligns from the S through WSW quadrants, the wave faces glass off and the right-handers off the point turn truly world-class. This is the prime window for quality sessions at Playa Negra.
Fair Surf Season (April, June, July, November)
During these transitional and early summer months, the trade wind regime begins to dominate, and Playa Negra becomes a game of percentages. April still enjoys a decent 37% offshore wind window and average 1.0m swell, though the period drops to 7.6s, making the waves a bit more sections. June and July see a rebound in swell height (1.1–1.3m) and period (8.2–8.4s) as the Eastern Pacific hurricane season starts to toss in extra energy, but the wind turns sour: only 23–24% offshore. Most days you'll be battling a bumpy onshore flow from the NW or NNW. Still, when a hurricane swell lines up with a rare morning offshore breeze, the rewards can be excellent. November is a transition back toward winter, with average 1.0m swell and a noticeable increase in N/NNE swell component, but the wind remains marginal at 24% offshore.
Low Surf Season (May, August, September, October)
These are the lean months at Playa Negra. Swell heights drop to 0.7–1.0m and periods shorten to 7.1–7.9s, producing small, weak surf that rarely exceeds fun-sized. The primary swell direction remains ENE, but the wind is almost always a problem: offshore frequencies fall to a miserable 21–26%. Persistent onshore winds from the NW and NNW keep the surface chopped and the waves mushy. Occasional infras from hurricanes or tropical storms can spike the swell, but those events are fleeting and often accompanied by even worse wind. For dedicated soul surfers, October is the absolute low point, with average 0.7m waves and only 21% offshore conditions. This is the time to explore other Central American spots or save the stoke for the upcoming winter.
