Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (March - May)

Spring brings the most favorable blend of swell direction and wind at Portsalon. While the North Atlantic still pumps long-period groundswells, the frequency of swell from the optimal NNE to E sector peaks during these months, reaching nearly 6% of all observations in May. Simultaneously, offshore SSW to W winds become more consistent, with ideal wind percentages climbing to 28-32%. This window offers the highest likelihood of groomed, rippable waves, though size often maxes out in the fun to solid range (1-2m). It's a season of quality over quantity.

Fair Surf Season (October - February)

The heart of winter delivers serious size—average swell heights of 2.7-3.2m and periods of 11-12.4s—as powerful extratropical cyclones march across the North Atlantic. However, the swell's dominant W to NW orientation (not optimal for this NE-facing beach) and consistently strong onshore winds from the north and east (blowing directly from the bad quadrant) mean only about a quarter of the time finds true offshore flow. When a high-pressure ridge sets up and a sharp low tracks south, you get a short-lived blast of long-period W swell with light land breezes, turning Portsalon into a powerful, heavy playground for experienced surfers.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer sees the North Atlantic energy dial way back. Average swell heights drop to 1.4-2.0m and periods fall below 10s, often producing small, weak, and wind-swell dominated waves. While the percentage of ideal offshore wind peaks at 39% in July and August, the lack of substantial swell direction from the east sector (only 1.9-2.6% combined) and the prevalence of choppy, short-period swell make for inconsistent, micro conditions. It's a flat spell punctuated by rare fun-sized days when a stray E swell coincides with a westerly breeze.
