Azurara seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, the North Atlantic shifts into full gear and Azurara sees the strongest, most consistent surf of the year. Average swell heights run from 6.9ft (2.1m) in October to a hefty 8.8ft (2.7m) in January, with average periods holding in the powerful 11-13 second band. The same frontal systems that bring rain to northern Portugal are also responsible for long-period W/SW/WSW groundswell, while the Iberian Peninsula often sits under pre-frontal easterly flow. Those offshore NNE/NE/ENE/E winds groom Azurara into beautiful, lined-up waves. This is the window for the biggest and most reliable surf, especially when negative NAO patterns steer storm tracks directly toward the Portuguese coast.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
April, May and September are transition months. The waves are still rideable, but the energy dials back: average heights drop to 6.9ft (2.1m) in April, 5.2ft (1.6m) in September and 5.6ft (1.7m) in May, with periods often falling below 12 seconds. During these months you find a mix of leftover winter groundswell and younger northwesterly swell, with crisp offshore mornings and warmer afternoons. With roughly 35-44 percent ideal wind, there are still plenty of tide-sensitive windows. You just have to pick the days with an easterly wind and a solid W/SW groundswell pulse.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months are the quiet season at Azurara. Average swell heights fall to 4.6ft (1.4m) and average periods sink below 9.5 seconds, meaning the coast becomes dominated by shorter-period NW/NNW windswell rather than true groundswell. The Azores High locks in place over the Iberian Peninsula, producing strong northwesterly coastal flow and a lack of swell-generating lows. Waves are usually small and soft, ideal for longboarders and beginners. But on the rare day when a southern-hemisphere swell or a rogue west pulse lines up with E/NE offshore wind, Azurara can still turn on.
