Azurara

Tucked just south of Vila do Conde, Azurara marks the first truly clean-water beach north of Porto—a consistent, sand-bottomed stretch that delivers workable, if unexceptional, peaks. The waves offer both lefts and rights, but they rarely build into anything beyond mediocre, making it a solid fallback when other spots are blown out. The shorebreak here, however, draws a dedicated crew of bodyboarders who know how to make the most of its steep, punchy wedges. Best on a moderate northwesterly swell with light offshore winds, and avoid the tide extremes when the sandbars can get fickle.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, the North Atlantic shifts into full gear and Azurara sees the strongest, most consistent surf of the year. Average swell heights run from 6.9ft (2.1m) in October to a hefty 8.8ft (2.7m) in January, with average periods holding in the powerful 11-13 second band. The same frontal systems that bring rain to northern Portugal are also responsible for long-period W/SW/WSW groundswell, while the Iberian Peninsula often sits under pre-frontal easterly flow. Those offshore NNE/NE/ENE/E winds groom Azurara into beautiful, lined-up waves. This is the window for the biggest and most reliable surf, especially when negative NAO patterns steer storm tracks directly toward the Portuguese coast.
