Praia da Bordeira stands as one of southern Portugal’s finest and most picturesque surf beaches, offering a dynamic blend of lefts and rights peeling over a mix of sand and uneven reef. The standout attraction is the low-tide left that wraps around the base of the Carrapateira cliffs directly below the car park, delivering long, sculpted walls when a solid west or northwest swell rolls in. This wave loves a moderate to low tide, working best with a clean groundswell and a light east or northeast wind to keep the faces smooth. It’s a versatile setup that can challenge intermediate surfers on a good day, while also offering forgiving sections for those stepping up. The surrounding cliffs and wild coastline amplify the raw beauty, making every session feel like a backcountry adventure.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

When the North Atlantic storm track gets cranking, Bordeira turns into a serious western-Portugal wave factory. From October through March, average swell heights push into the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range with periods sitting in the 11-13 second zone, and the dominant swell directions - WNW, NW and NNW - line up beautifully with this north-west facing beach. The combination of long-period groundswell and the occasional clean offshore wind window from W/WSW/SW/SSW makes this the prime time for quality surf. November, December and January are especially strong, while February and March keep delivering powerful Atlantic pulses as the ocean slowly transitions.
