Mareta seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic low-pressure machine is fully awake from October through March, and Mareta feels every pulse of it. During these months average swell heights hover between 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods climbing to 12-13s, delivering real power to the Algarve. The catch is that the most frequent swell direction is northwest, and this south-facing beach needs a more southerly component - ideally southeast, south-southeast, south or south-southwest - to shine. However, when storm tracks dip south and swing those swells into the south/south-southwest quadrant, Mareta lights up with long, grinding walls. Northerly and northwesterly winds are also most reliable in this window, frequently grooming conditions offshore.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, average swell heights ease to 5-6ft (1.5-1.9m) and periods settle into the 10-12s range. April and May still get frequent pulses of northwesterly swell, but the shorter periods make the surf less organized. September is the standout of this group, with late-season warmth, 5ft (1.5m) average swells and the highest percentage of ideal wind conditions of the year at 35%.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest stretch at Mareta. The Azores High dominates, the North Atlantic storm track retreats toward Iceland, and average swell heights drop to 4-5ft (1.4m) with periods sinking to 8-9s. Swell direction is overwhelmingly north/northwest, which struggles to get into this south-facing beach, and although the thermal northerly winds are offshore and keep the surface smooth, it is often small and soft - a better time for a longboard than a step-up.
