Mareta offers a classic southwest-facing town beachbreak, peeling both left and right over a sandy bottom. When the west coast is blown out or maxing out, this sheltered stretch becomes a savvy go-to, with peaks scattered along the beach delivering fun, workable walls that rarely blow your mind but consistently entertain. The true gems—hollow, bowly perfection—are fleeting and rare, making them a sweet reward for those who time it right.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic low-pressure machine is fully awake from October through March, and Mareta feels every pulse of it. During these months average swell heights hover between 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods climbing to 12-13s, delivering real power to the Algarve. The catch is that the most frequent swell direction is northwest, and this south-facing beach needs a more southerly component - ideally southeast, south-southeast, south or south-southwest - to shine. However, when storm tracks dip south and swing those swells into the south/south-southwest quadrant, Mareta lights up with long, grinding walls. Northerly and northwesterly winds are also most reliable in this window, frequently grooming conditions offshore.
