Meia Praia seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Meia Praia's SSE-facing sandbars come alive when the North Atlantic starts producing strong extratropical storms in autumn. From October through March, the average swell height sits in the 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) range, with long periods of 11-13s and the highest percentage of offshore N/NW/WNW/NNW winds. Distant low-pressure systems track close enough to Iberia to push S/SSW/SW/WSW groundswell into the Algarve, and the offshore north winds groom the faces into clean, rippable lines. The NAO knows this dance: when the index turns negative or neutral, storms dive farther south and Meia Praia reaps the reward; when it is strongly positive, most of the energy stays in the northern Atlantic.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
April and May are classic shoulder months. The swell drops to waist/shoulder-high, periods fall into the 8-10s range, and the wind becomes more thermally driven from the N/NE. September is the first hint of autumn: the water is still warm at 19.6°C, the wind is ideal 38% of the time, and the average period climbs back above 10s. These months can serve up clean, small waves and the occasional early/late-season swell, but consistency is not on their side.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August are the low surf season at Meia Praia. The surf height sinks to 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), periods drop back into the 8-9s range, and the swell rose becomes a NW-dominated windswell machine. Although N/NNW winds continue to blow offshore and keep the surface clean, the missing ingredient is southern-hemisphere or southwest Atlantic groundswell - only a tiny percentage of the wave energy arrives from the ideal S/SSW/SW/WSW window. This is the season for longboarders, beginners and warm-water fun, not for serious wave-chasing; the real swell returns in October.
