Nestled across the rivermouth from Lagos, Meia Praia stretches out as a long, crescent-shaped sweep of golden sand that defines the region’s mellow side. By default, this spot is a sanctuary of calm—its tucked-away orientation filters out most of the ocean’s energy, offering a gentle, forgiving canvas that beginners adore and anyone can enjoy. But don’t let the laid-back disposition fool you. When the winter swell finds its way in, the bay transforms: lefts and rights unfurl along the beach, delivering surprisingly fun, sometimes fast and hollow rides that reward a sharp eye for the shifting sandbars. The paddle-out is as easy as it gets, and that sandy bottom ensures a forgiving landing. In short, Meia Praia is a study in contrasts—a beginner’s haven that can secretly serve up a proper wave when conditions line up just right.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Meia Praia's SSE-facing sandbars come alive when the North Atlantic starts producing strong extratropical storms in autumn. From October through March, the average swell height sits in the 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) range, with long periods of 11-13s and the highest percentage of offshore N/NW/WNW/NNW winds. Distant low-pressure systems track close enough to Iberia to push S/SSW/SW/WSW groundswell into the Algarve, and the offshore north winds groom the faces into clean, rippable lines. The NAO knows this dance: when the index turns negative or neutral, storms dive farther south and Meia Praia reaps the reward; when it is strongly positive, most of the energy stays in the northern Atlantic.
