Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha is a sweeping stretch of golden sand in Portimão, anchored by a wedgey, hollow left that peels with intent near the western breakwater at the rivermouth. This wave is a tube-hunter’s prize, spitting barrels when the swell lines up, but it’s a fickle performer—requiring a solid, proper swell to truly fire. Head west along the beach, and the setup shifts: a series of peaks offer playful lefts and rights that are more forgiving and fun for a broader range of surfers.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic becomes the controlling factor in the Algarve from late autumn through winter. A southward-shifting storm track and a weaker Azores High allow low-pressure systems to fire toward the Iberian Peninsula, sending consistent, long-period swell toward the Algarve. At Praia da Rocha, the beach faces SSW, so the magic directions are S, SSW, SW and WSW; when those combine with offshore winds from N, NNE, NE and ENE, the sandbar produces clean, lined-up A-frames. Average swell heights from January, February and December sit at 4.6ft (1.4m) with average periods in the powerful 12-13s range, and ideal wind percentages climb to 37-43%. October through March is the prime window, with the most reliable combo of size, period and offshore grooming.
