Zavial is a classic South Algarve gem—a small, sandy cove that packs a punch when the swell lines up. Its claim to fame is a fast, hollow, and powerful right-hander that wedges off the western point, then peels with authority across the sand, offering fleeting but memorable barrels for those who earn them. This is one of the better-known spots on the south coast, and even a whisper of swell can draw a crowd, so expect company. The wave breaks over sand, and when it’s on, expect heavy, wedgy sections that demand quick reflexes and a sharp rail—no room for hesitation here.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Zavial's best months are the autumn and winter ones, when the North Atlantic low-pressure engine re-ignites. The storm track crosses the eastern Atlantic, driving average swell heights into the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range and pushing wave periods up to 11-13 seconds. The NAO is the master switch: when it turns negative, depressions ride farther south and deliver the S/SW angled groundswell that Zavial's SSW-facing beach craves. Combined with post-frontal offshore N/NNE/NE/NNW winds, this window produces the clean, lined-up conditions the spot is made for. The direct S/SW component is never a huge slice of the wave rose in absolute terms, but October-March - especially November and December - holds the highest share, and that is when Zavial really fires.
