Moledo do Minho

Moledo do Minho is a classic northern Portuguese river-mouth set-up, where the border between Portugal and Spain spills into the Atlantic, sculpting a shifting sand bar that delivers punchy, hollow right-handers when swell, tide, and river current align. These waves are fast, sometimes dredging, and demand sharp reflexes. Toward the southern end of the beach, a series of reefs kick up sectioned lefts, offering a more playful, rippable alternative when the bar is too fickle or blown out.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The year at Moledo do Minho is defined by the seasonal pulse of the North Atlantic. From October through March, the wave machine switches on as extratropical cyclones track across the Atlantic, aiming long-period groundswell into the northwest corner of Portugal. Average wave heights sit in the 7-9ft (2.1-2.7m) range, periods average 11-13s, and the wind is offshore 44-56% of the time, often courtesy of high pressure settling over Iberia and feeding cool east/southeast winds down to the coast. When the NAO trends negative, the Azores High weakens and the storm track dives south, which can turn this already lively stretch of coast into a serious winter surf spot.
