Best with a clean sea breeze and an incoming tide to focus the sandbars, this spot can handle a variety of swell directions, though it truly springs to life on a north to west pulse.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, the North Atlantic roars back to life and Vila Praia de Ancora sits squarely in the firing line. Average swell heights jump to the 7-9ft (2.1-2.7m) range, average periods stretch deep into the 11-13s category, and the percentage of ideal winds peaks between 43 and 55 percent. This is the classic Portuguese winter set-up: extratropical cyclones marching across the Atlantic, often steered by a negative or neutral North Atlantic Oscillation, feed the west-facing beach with powerful WNW and NW groundswell, while high pressure between systems delivers offshore/easterly morning flow. It is cold, occasionally stormy, and absolutely the best time of year for serious surf.
