Best Surf Season (October - March)
Praia da Vieira is a classic North Atlantic beachbreak that saves its best work for the colder months. Once autumn's first deep lows begin marching across the Atlantic, the average groundswell climbs toward 8ft (2.4m) and the average period stretches into the 12-13s range. The west-northwest open exposure lines up perfectly with the dominant W, WNW and NW swells, while the frequent easterly offshore windows (ONO-O-OSO-SO) keep the faces clean. December and January are the statistical peak, but October through March consistently offer the most powerful, organized surf of the year. When the NAO dips negative, storms track closer to Iberia and the beach can turn XL. This is when your step-up board and reef booties earn their keep.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
April and May are transition months: the Atlantic still produces rideable swell, but average heights soften from 6ft (1.8m) to 5ft (1.5m) and the period drops from 11s to 10s. The wind shifts increasingly toward the summer NNW regime, so it becomes a game of hunting the morning offshore and picking off the better WNW/NW swells before the sea breeze or northerly kicks in. September is the optimistic end of summer-a viable pre-autumn window that sees swell heights jump back to 5ft (1.5m) and periods push toward 10.5s, with warm water and more sunny weather than winter.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the flat-to-marginal season. The average swell drops to 4ft (1.3m) and periods shorten to 8.7-9.3s, leaving a low-energy mix of short-period NW/NNW swell and wind chop. The thermal northerly wind machine dominates-NNW winds blow 49-59% of the time-which is the wrong side for Praia da Vieira and only 5-9% of the days offer ideal offshore conditions. This is the season for small-wave boards, longboards and patience; the real swell trains don't start rolling in until late September.
