Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Ribeira das Janelas is in its element. The Azores High weakens, the Icelandic Low deepens, and the North Atlantic storm track aims a steady stream of extratropical lows at the Portuguese coast. During negative NAO winters that storm track shifts even farther south, amplifying the size and frequency of the swells that arrive in this corner of the Atlantic. Swell heights average 6-9ft (1.8-2.7m) with periods of 11.5-13s, giving the N/NNE-facing stretch of sand plenty of power. The ideal offshore wind blows from the S, SSW, SW and WSW, and during this six-month window it blows around 17-21% of the time. When a low pressure center drifts past the Iberian Peninsula, the wind clock swings into the south quadrant and Ribeira das Janelas turns clean, hollow and seriously fun.
