Best Surf Season (October - March)
The heart of the action at Sao Torpes unfolds between October and March, when the North Atlantic storm track is aimed squarely at the Iberian coast. Average swell heights hover in the 2.1-2.4m (7-8ft) range and periods run from a powerful 12s in March up to 13.1s in January, meaning the beach is frequently groomed by heavy groundswell. The west-southwest exposure makes it especially sensitive to swells from W, WSW, WNW and, of course, the long-period NW groundswell that wraps around the local coastline. Off-season easterly winds (NE, ENE, E, ESE) blow offshore and groom the waves under a strong Iberian high, which is why the ideal wind numbers peak at 42-49% from November to February. Water temperatures are cool, ranging from 14.8-18.3°C, but the consistency and raw power more than make up for a wetsuit.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
April, May and September function as transition months. The ocean still delivers surfable swell - 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft) average in April and May and 1.4m (4-5ft) in September - but the period drops into the 10-11s range and NW windswell becomes more common. Ideal winds fall to 22-26%, with late-spring afternoon sea breezes and cross-shore NNW winds making dawn patrol the cleanest bet. Water warms into the 15.7-18.1°C range. There are good days, especially when weak lows form in the Atlantic, but you have to pick your windows.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June through August is the summer doldrums. The Azores High locks in over the north-east Atlantic, suppressing the storm track and funneling persistent NNW and NW winds into the Portuguese coast. Wave heights drop to 1.3m (4ft), periods shorten to 8.6-9.3s, and the swell becomes a mix of small NW windswell and ultra-short-period leftovers. With the exception of rare light offshore mornings, quality suffers. Surfing still happens, particularly in protected corners or on days when the north wind backs off, but this is the least reliable stretch of the year for Sao Torpes.
