Sao Torpes

São Torpes serves up a lively, versatile spread of beachbreak peaks that unfold over a sandy bottom, offering plenty of room for performance-oriented surfing in both directions. The wave quality and size ramp up as you head south, where the first rocky outcroppings and small coves break the monotony and add a dash of character to the lineup. The northern end sits hard against the jetty and the hulking petroleum refineries, which provide partial swell shelter and a welcome buffer from north winds. But keep in mind—the industrial backdrop comes with a real cost: heavy pollution, so plan your sessions accordingly.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the action at Sao Torpes unfolds between October and March, when the North Atlantic storm track is aimed squarely at the Iberian coast. Average swell heights hover in the 2.1-2.4m (7-8ft) range and periods run from a powerful 12s in March up to 13.1s in January, meaning the beach is frequently groomed by heavy groundswell. The west-southwest exposure makes it especially sensitive to swells from W, WSW, WNW and, of course, the long-period NW groundswell that wraps around the local coastline. Off-season easterly winds (NE, ENE, E, ESE) blow offshore and groom the waves under a strong Iberian high, which is why the ideal wind numbers peak at 42-49% from November to February. Water temperatures are cool, ranging from 14.8-18.3°C, but the consistency and raw power more than make up for a wetsuit.
