Best Surf Season (May - August)

Prainha hits its stride during the southern winter, when the South Atlantic high-pressure system strengthens and cold fronts march farther north. This shift brings a dramatic increase in offshore wind frequencies from the W, WNW, and NW quadrants—exactly what this east-southeast-facing beach needs to groom clean, lined-up waves. Swell energy remains solid, averaging 1.6-1.7m with periods of 9-10s, sourced from a mix of distant Antarctic storms and mid-latitude depressions. The result is consistent, punchy surf that holds shape from dawn to dusk, with plenty of rippable walls and occasional bigger sets when the period pushes into the 12-14s range. This is the window to plan a trip; 50% or more of the days deliver ideal wind, and the sun often shines between fronts.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September)

Shoulder months offer a blend of conditions. March and April still see the tail end of summer trade winds, but the pattern wavers more as autumn sets in—offshore wind frequencies climb from 37% to 43%, and the swell mix shifts from pure east to a healthier southeast and south component. September, on the other hand, is the early spring transition: the trade winds are returning, but occasional late-winter cold fronts still fire up good NW wind days. Surf height averages 1.6-1.8m, and while the ideal wind window is narrower (29-37%), the quality can be excellent when everything aligns. Expect a few days of onshore slop between the clean windows, but savvy surfers who watch the charts can score fun, punchy waves.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

The southern summer brings persistent easterly trade winds that blow directly onshore at Prainha. The wind rose from October through February is dominated by NE, ENE, and E winds at 10-20 kph, creating choppy, lumpy surface conditions even when solid swell is running. Swell direction is predominantly from the east and east-southeast (ENE, E, ESE), which is ideal in theory, but the wind ruins the texture. The average wave period drops to 8.2-8.6s, meaning more short-period, disorganized energy. The percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to 23-34%. While there will be occasional windows with lighter land breezes or rare southerly change, these months are generally a waiting game. The best bet is to chase early morning glass-offs or hope for a cold front to push through, but overall, it's the least reliable time for quality surf at this spot.
