Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - December)

The final quarter of the year marks the apex of Puerto Madero's surf season. As autumn deepens, the North Pacific roars to life with powerful extratropical storms, sending long-period groundswells toward the Mexican coast. Simultaneously, the Southern Hemisphere is still active, providing a mixed swell window. The key ingredient, however, is the wind. From October through December, the region experiences its highest percentage of offshore winds (N to ENE), often ushered in by strong high-pressure systems over the Gulf of Mexico. This combination yields clean, lined-up waves with average heights in the 1.1-1.4m range and periods consistently above 11s. When a proper SSW swell lines up with these offshore breezes, Puerto Madero fires at its best.

Fair Surf Season (January, June - September)

During these months, the surf is still very much alive, but the conditions come with a few more caveats. In January, winter swells continue but with slightly less wind consistency (53% ideal). Summer months (June-September) bring the highest average swell heights (1.4-1.5m) and longest periods (13-14s) as the Southern Hemisphere winter storms dominate. However, the wind regime shifts: afternoon sea breezes from the south and southeast can introduce bump, making early morning sessions prime. Still, the sheer quantity of SSW swell ensures plenty of rideable, punchy waves. These months offer the biggest surf of the year, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully.

Low Surf Season (February - May)

Late winter through spring presents the most challenging conditions for Puerto Madero. The wind ideal percentage drops to 42-48%, with onshore winds from the south and southwest becoming more frequent as the season progresses. While swell heights remain respectable (1.1-1.4m) and periods often exceed 12s, the quality is often compromised by wind. April is the toughest month, with only a 42% chance of offshore wind. However, this is still a transitional period; occasional strong cold fronts passing through the Gulf can deliver clean offshore days with fun, groveling waves. Patience and a flexible schedule are key during these months.
