Punta de Lobos is the crown jewel of Chilean surfing, a world-class left-hander that has earned its reputation as a consistent, high-performance wave machine. Set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged cliffs and golden sand, this spot delivers long, peeling lefts that can stretch up to 200 yards, offering ample room for carving, deep barrels, and strategic maneuvering. Its proximity to Santiago makes it the go-to for a quick surf fix, but don’t mistake accessibility for solitude—especially in summer, the beach buzzes with a vibrant mix of locals, expats, and beachgoers all soaking up the sun and swell. The wave here is a slow-moving, grinder that requires patience and timing. Optimal swell direction is southwest, but south and west swells also work, with wave heights ranging from head-high (1.5 meters) to well over double overhead (12 meters). As size increases, the take-off zone shifts further outside, demanding a solid paddle-out that can double as a workout on bigger days. Low tide is preferred for the cleanest shape, though the wave breaks at any tide level. Expect the lineup to be crowded—Punta de Lobos is Chile’s second busiest spot after Reñaca—but multiple take-off zones help spread the crowd, giving intermediate surfers a chance to test their skills when conditions are manageable. Respect the local pecking order, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the best lefts in South America.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (March - May & September - October)

The South Pacific stirs with consistent energy, and Punta de Lobos sees a compelling window of quality surf during these transition months. While the dominant swell direction rarely aligns with the spot's ideal north quadrant, the powerful, long-period SW groundswells wrap into the bay, offering more size and shape. This is when the percentage of offshore winds peaks, as the subtropical high strengthens, funneling clean, sideshore breezes from the SSW and SW across the lineup. The result is a smoother, more organized wave face that makes even a 1.5m-2m WSW swell ride with memorable power.

Fair Surf Season (June - August)

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere delivers a steady diet of solid SW and W swell, but the wind consistency drops slightly. The dominant high-pressure cell weakens, allowing more variable conditions, including occasional strengthening of the onshore flow. Still, the periods remain long (12-13s), and when the breeze cooperates from the S or SSW, waves become punchy and hollow on the point. Expect some overhead days mixed with wind-affected sessions.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer brings a milder synoptic pattern. The South Pacific storm track retreats slightly, and average swell heights hold steady but with a smaller percentage of clean, long-period energy. The wind ideal percentage dips into the low 60s, and the stronger thermal flows can produce afternoon onshores. However, morning glass-offs and SW pulses still provide plenty of rideable, fun-sized waves. This is a reliable period for smaller, rippable conditions with the occasional clean window.
