Best Surf Season (October – March)

The North Atlantic shifts into high gear from October onward, pumping consistent NW and WNW swell into the exposed NW-facing coastline of Salinas. Average wave heights hover between 1.3m and 1.7m with periods often in the 11–13s range, translating to powerful, well-lined-up waves. Offshore winds from the S through WSW quadrants blow clean more than 55% of the time during these months, thanks to a climatological dominance of high pressure over the Iberian Peninsula and low-pressure systems tracking across northern Europe. When the NAO index swings negative, we see even more frequent cold fronts swinging down, delivering long-period groundswell with glassy conditions – that's when Salinas really fires.

Fair Surf Season (April – May & September)

During the shoulder months, the North Atlantic storm track begins to relax, and average wave heights drop to 1.0–1.3m with periods settling around 10–11s. The swell direction remains dominated by NW and NNW, but the energy is more moderate, often offering fun, rippable waves rather than heavy barrels. Offshore wind frequency decreases slightly to the 40–49% range as thermal gradients and local sea breezes become more influential. Still, early mornings often deliver clean conditions, and periodic late-season cold fronts can spice things up with a punchy, long-period pulse.

Low Surf Season (June – August)

Summer brings a marked lull in swell activity to Salinas. Average wave heights tumble to 0.8–0.9m with periods around 8–9s, and the swell mix is dominated by short-period NW to NNW windswell rather than proper groundswell. The wind is ideal only about 37–41% of the time, as the prevailing synoptic pattern features a strong Azores High that funnels lighter, often onshore NW winds. Days with any rideable waves are scarce, and when swell does arrive it's usually small and weak – better suited to a longboard or a foiling session than a high-performance shortboard. For serious surf, wait for autumn.
