Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific winter machine cranks up during these months, sending consistent, long-period swell from the N-NNW quadrant into Sandy Beach. Average wave heights hover around 1.5–1.6m and periods frequently hit 10s, delivering the powerful, firing conditions the spot is famous for. However, the trade-off is wind: easterly trades dominate, often blowing cross-shore or light onshore from NE-ENE, keeping the ideal offshore (S-SSW) window to just 28–35% of the time. When a cold front sweeps through and the wind clocks south, pumping waves with clean faces are the reward.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)

Spring and early autumn offer a noticeable improvement in wind quality. Ideal offshore conditions increase to 46–58% as the pressure gradient relaxes, but average swell heights drop to 1.1–1.3m and periods shorten to 8.7–9.6s. The swell direction shifts more toward NE-ENE, which doesn't hit the beach as directly; still, enough N-NNE energy mixes in to provide rippable, fun-sized waves on the better days. September stands out with a decent swell bump (1.1m, 9.1s) and a 49% chance of offshore wind.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is sleepy at Sandy Beach. The average wave height bottoms out at 1.0m and wave periods dip to 6.7–7.3s, leading to small, low-period conditions. Swell is almost exclusively from the ENE-E quadrant, which struggles to wrap into the NNW-facing beach; most of the energy is blocked or arrives as weak, short-period lines. The wind is actually favorable a decent portion of the time (42–61%), but without a solid swell to work with, it's mostly a groveling session on a longboard. Occasional tropical systems can stir things up, but they're rare.
