Best Surf Season (November - February)

The heart of the Black Sea winter delivers the most consistent swell energy to Sochi's SW-facing beaches. From November through February, average swell heights climb to 0.7-0.8m and wave periods stretch into the 5.4-5.6s range, offering punchy, rideable waves. This is when low-pressure systems tracking across the Black Sea generate dominant westerly and southwesterly swell, which, when aligned with a northerly offshore wind, can produce fun, rippable conditions. However, the prevailing wind regime is dominated by southeasterly winds (offshore from the mountains), which blow onshore and often degrade the wave quality. The ideal window is narrow, but persistent winter storms can occasionally deliver clean lines for the dedicated local crew. The percentage of optimal offshore wind (N to ENE) peaks at 22% in December, making it the most reliable month for good surf.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, October)

As the seasons transition, Sochi sees a drop in both swell size and consistency. March and April average wave heights fall to 0.5-0.6m with periods under 5s, resulting in mostly small, groveling waves. October sees a slight rebound to 0.5m and 4.6s as autumn storms begin to stir the Black Sea. Wind ideal percentages hover between 9-13%, meaning offshore conditions are rare. During these months, the best chance for a good session comes from a late-season cold front in March or an early-season low in October, bringing a brief flush of SW swell and northerly winds. Most days, however, you're looking at weak, wind-affected surf.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer brings flat, micro conditions to Sochi. From May through September, average swell heights bottom out at 0.4m and wave periods drop to a choppy 4.0-4.2s. The Black Sea is dominated by high pressure and light wind patterns, with the wind blowing predominantly from the south and southeast – onshore and detrimental to wave quality. Offshore wind (N to ENE) occurs only 5-11% of the time. The surf is essentially non-existent for most of this period, with only rare, tiny windswell from westerly directions breaking on the beach. Unless you are desperate for a paddle, these months are best spent on other activities.
