Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the South African winter lines up beautifully for Ansteys. Long-period groundswell from the deep Southern Ocean travels north through the Indian Ocean, and the swell window of E through SSE fills with consistent 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) surf. Average periods peak between 10.2 and 10.8s, so when the mid-latitude fronts push through, the energy is powerful and well organized. Just as importantly, the westerly side of those frontal systems delivers the offshore W/NW/NNW winds that groom the southeast-facing beachbreak. May and June are the real standouts, with ideal wind percentages climbing to 50-55 percent, while the water remains a manageable 21.8-23.7°C.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

These are transition months. March and April see summer NE trades gradually losing their grip, while September and October feel the return of spring warmth. Swell periods sit at 9.6-10.0s and there are still solid 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) waves from the E/ESE/SE/SSE and S sectors. Ideal wind windows are more inconsistent, around 28-37 percent, but cold fronts in April and September can deliver clean offshore mornings before NE or SSW winds take over.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The summer months are the most challenging for consistent quality at Ansteys. The NE trade winds strengthen and a competing SSW flow appears, while true W/NW offshore winds become scarce; ideal wind percentages crash to just 17-23 percent. Average swell periods drop to 8.7-9.4s, leaving shorter period, more wind-affected waves. That said, the swell direction is excellent - E/ESE/SE/SSE energy accounts for a huge share of the spectrum, so on those rare mornings when a light offshore breathes over the sandbanks, the waves still have plenty of push and size.
