Avalanche

Avalanche at St Francis Bay anchors the north end of Pollock Beach, squarely in the heart of Summerstrand. This reef-and-sand-bottom right-hander draws a dedicated local crew and a solid traveling pack, especially when the south-east swells pulse. The beach offers full amenities—parking, facilities, easy access—so you can settle in for a full day of surfing. Avalanche comes alive with south-east groundswell, though east and south-west directions can also deliver. It handles swell in the 3-foot range (about 0.9 meters), breaking over a mix of rock ledge and sand. The wave is a fast, right-hand reef break suited to intermediate surfers who can navigate a tight takeoff zone and read the shifting lineup across all tides—low, mid, and high. Best sessions align with south-west winds that groom the faces and keep the wave from closing out. Consistency is a strength here, but so is the crowd. When conditions line up, the lineup gets thick. Expect company and pack your patience along with your board. Best Surf Season (November - March)

The late spring and summer months are the closest thing Avalanche ever sees to a dependable season. As the South Atlantic high pressure cell settles in and the mid-latitude storm track drifts poleward, the local wind regime becomes noticeably less hostile. Ideal offshore flow from S, SSW, SW and WSW makes up 25-28 percent of the daily observations, and average wave heights sit in the 6-7ft (1.9-2.1m) range with periods of 10.7-11.7s. That is powerful, ridable groundswell. The catch is that the swell tables show virtually zero N, NNE, NE or ENE swell-the directions this NNE-facing beach actually wants-so most of the energy arrives from SSW/SW and has to wrap or refract. Even so, when a fading SSW/SW groundswell meets a post-frontal WSW offshore wind, Avalanche turns on with clean, rippable peaks.
