Best Surf Season (May - August)

Dungeons is a deep-water big-wave reef that answers to the South Atlantic's mood. During the austral winter months of May through August, the mid-latitude storm track shifts north and begins firing rounds of vigorous extratropical cyclones toward the Cape. This climatological uptick sends long-period SSW to WSW groundswell into the Hout Bay headland with remarkable consistency. Average wave heights climb to 8.5-9.5ft (2.6-2.9m), periods hold in the powerful 12.4-12.6s range, and the odds of a clean offshore wind from N through ENE double compared to summer, hitting 15-22% of the time. The result is a season where Dungeons can go from ominous, heaving lumps to perfectly groomed XXL walls in a matter of hours.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

March and April, along with September and October, represent the transitional seasons. The ocean is still loaded with South Atlantic energy - average swells hover around 7.5-8.9ft (2.3-2.7m) - and periods remain above 11.5s, so there are excellent waves on offer. However, the offshore wind window narrows to 7-13% of the time, and the return of southeasterly flow adds more texture to the faces. These are months for the opportunistic surfer: watch for passing cold fronts and time the N/NE clearing winds that often follow them.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

By November, the austral summer takes hold and Dungeons retreats from its winter fury. Average swells still sit around 7.5-7.9ft (2.3-2.4m) with periods near 11-11.4s, so the spot is never flat, but the consistency of long-period XL groundswell drops off noticeably. The dominant wind flow shifts to the SE/SSE 'Cape Doctor', which blows 40-60% of the time and creates cross-shore/sideshore chop on the reef. With ideal offshore wind only 5-6% of the time, sessions are limited. The saving grace is the relative warmth - air temps in the high teens to low 20s°C and water temps of 16.6-17.2°C - and the occasional SSW swell that, if caught with a rare NE offshore, still produces world-class waves at Dungeons.
