August: Late Winter Power and Wider Trade-Wind Influence

August carries the tail end of winter's punch. Average swell height is still an impressive 9.2ft (2.8m) with a 12.4s period, and the SW (17.5%), SSW (9.8%) and WSW (9.0%) sectors continue to pour in long-period groundswell. The proportion of over 8ft (2.5m) swell remains high, so XL conditions are still very much on the table. The wind picture, however, begins its slow return to spring: ideal N-NE offshore flow drops to 15%, while SE (14.9%), SSE (13.8%) and NNW (15.9%) winds share the pie almost equally. This makes August a bit more inconsistent than June or July, with more days of sideshore texture. Still, when a low pressure system tracks through the South Atlantic and a cold front clears the Cape, Dungeons can be as good as anything on the planet. Air temps remain cool at 14.3°C (9.2-21.8), water temp is the coolest of the year at 14.7°C, and precipitation eases to 2.12mm/day.
