Mossel Bay

There is no true flat season at Mossel Bay. The bay is a year-round wave machine, but the quality of those waves swings hard with the wind. The north-facing exposure means the often-cited N/NNO/NO/NNW swell window is statistically rare, and the real engine of surf here is long-period S/SW groundswell wrapping into the bay from the Southern Ocean. The yearly rhythm is all about finding the windows where S/SW offshore wind lines up with that groundswell.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, ideal wind percentages climb to 38-49 percent, water temperatures sit between 17.2 and 21.6°C, and the swell settles into a consistent 6.6-7.2ft (2.0-2.2m) range on 10.6-11.2s periods. The Southern Ocean is still sending pulses, but they are cleaner, better organised and far more rippable. Summer high pressure keeps the howling winter northwesterlies at bay, and the post-frontal S/SW breezes groom the surface. This is the window to book a trip.
