Mossel Bay • Surf Spot Statistics

There is no true flat season at Mossel Bay. The bay is a year-round wave machine, but the quality of those waves swings hard with the wind. The north-facing exposure means the often-cited N/NNO/NO/NNW swell window is statistically rare, and the real engine of surf here is long-period S/SW groundswell wrapping into the bay from the Southern Ocean. The yearly rhythm is all about finding the windows where S/SW offshore wind lines up with that groundswell.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, ideal wind percentages climb to 38-49 percent, water temperatures sit between 17.2 and 21.6°C, and the swell settles into a consistent 6.6-7.2ft (2.0-2.2m) range on 10.6-11.2s periods. The Southern Ocean is still sending pulses, but they are cleaner, better organised and far more rippable. Summer high pressure keeps the howling winter northwesterlies at bay, and the post-frontal S/SW breezes groom the surface. This is the window to book a trip.

Fair Surf Season (April and September)

April and September are transition months that offer a blend of winter power and improving winds. April holds a healthy 39 percent ideal wind score with a 6.9ft (2.1m) average swell at 11.6s, but the wind becomes less predictable as cold fronts ramp up. September is the spring rebound, with ideal wind back up to 35 percent and the swell still a powerful 7.5ft (2.3m) at 11.5s. These months reward surfers who are willing to read the daily forecast and move when the wind swings offshore.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Do not let the bigger size fool you. May through August is the least consistent surf season at Mossel Bay because the wind window tightens to just 23-30 percent ideal flow. The same mid-latitude lows that pump oversized SW groundswell also drag pre-frontal N/NNW winds across the bay, producing lumpy, onshore conditions. The waves are heavier and more powerful, period averages reach 12.0-12.3s, and there are moments of brilliance when the post-frontal S/SW wind arrives. But you have to be patient and picky.
