June: Peak Winter Consistency

June is the statistical heart of the best surf season at Nahoon Reef. Average swell height peaks at 2.1m, just over 7ft, and the period hits 12.1s as the highest of the year - a clear sign of powerful, long-period groundswell marching up the South African Indian Ocean coast. Direction is heavily SSW at 32.4 per cent and S at 16.9 per cent, with the SSW contributions concentrated in the 1.5-2m class at 17.1 per cent and the 2-2.5m class at 10.4 per cent. That is a lot of juice; even if the direction is not the classic E/ESE/SE/SSE angle that fires Nahoon's best shape, the sheer size and period open up the reef and create heavy, grinding waves. The wind statistics are excellent: 49 per cent favourable, by far the highest of the year. W at 10.7 per cent, WNW at 5.8 per cent, NW at 8.6 per cent and NNW at 11.7 per cent all become frequent, delivering the offshore, groomed texture you crave.

Air temperatures drop to 18.1°C, water cools to 19.8°C, but rain is almost non-existent at 0.91mm/day. Cold fronts pass quickly under massive South Atlantic highs, and the combination of winter swell and northwest winds creates some of the most consistent and powerful surf of the year at Nahoon.
