Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the austral autumn and winter, the Southern Ocean switches on and the southwest-facing Strand beach sits directly in the firing line of repeated mid-latitude cyclones. Average swell heights climb from 8ft (2.5m) in May to a winter peak around 9ft (2.8m), while average wave periods stretch out to 12.4-12.5s - firmly in the powerful long-period class. Equally important, the frequency of ideal wind windows jumps to 55-57% in May, June and July as the dominant summer SSE/SE gradient weakens and cooler, more offshore-friendly flow takes over. This is the prime window for consistent, powerful, well-groomed SW and WSW groundswell at Strand.
