August: Late-Winter Holding Pattern

August keeps the winter swell train rolling, but the wind consistency starts to give way to spring variability. Average height peaks at 1.8m, average period is still a solid 10.2s, and ideal wind drops slightly to 47%. Swell energy remains healthy: S 20.9%, SSE 16.6%, ENE 14.2%, E 14.2%, ESE 11.6% and SE 11.5%. The ENE quadrant is particularly strong this month, with 3.1% of all waves in the 2-2.5m range, so there is often a secondary E/ENE pulse alongside the S swell. The wind rose becomes more mixed. SSW (11.9%) and NE (11.6%) are evenly matched, with ENE 7.3%, WNW 6.7%, NW 6.2% and W 4.3% all contributing. This means more surface texture from the NE sea breeze, but the W and NW windows are still long enough. Air temp climbs slightly to 18.8°C, water is at its coolest, 21.0°C, and rainfall is just 0.81 mm/day. August rewards patience: pick the morning offshore windows and the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) S and SSE groundswell will be all-time.
