January: High Summer Slop and Occasional Windows

January is the heart of high summer, and the South Atlantic High is locking in an ESE/SE trade-wind regime across the Garden Route. Wind statistics show why crystal-clean Victoria Bay is hard to find this month: ESE winds blow 20% of the time, SE 13%, and E 10%, and overall the bay experiences onshore flow most days. The ideal offshore wind window of N, WNW, NW and NNW is just 21%, so you are often battling a bumpy, drifting sea on the surface.

Beneath that wind chop, the mean swell is still a healthy 7ft (2.1m) with a 10.7s period - punchy, rideable groundswell. The dominant swell directions are SSW at 28% and SW at 18%, while the preferred ESE-S window accounts for 34% of total swell, with S at 13%. Most of the energy falls in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range, so when a dawn northerly or light offshore wind aligns, there are fun, rippable waves to be had. The water is warmest of the year at 20.9°C and air temps average 21.1°C, so the main enemy is wind, not cold.
