Andran seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Andran is a deep-water, exposed Atlantic beach on the Spanish Cantabrian coast, which means it lives and dies by the strength of the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March the average wave height steadily holds in the 1.5-1.9m (5-6ft) range, while average swell periods stretch from 11.2s up to 12.7s. These are powerful, long-period groundswells, and the dominant NW-NNW-WNW direction is exactly the swell window Andran needs. The wind patterns also align better in winter: S, SSW, SW and WSW offshore flow is much more common, especially in December and January when the wind is ideal for surfing around 45-46% of the time. Expect consistent, sometimes heavy surf, cooler water (12.9-14.2°C) and the need for a full winter wetsuit.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Spring and early fall are transition seasons. April still sees average heights near 1.4m (4-5ft) with a 10.7s period, and September offers the first taste of renewed autumn energy, but the wind becomes less cooperative. E/ENE flow and NW sea breezes take over, lowering the percentage of ideal offshore wind to 20-26%. Surf is less consistent, though clean windows can still deliver fun, rippable waves, especially before thermal onshore winds kick in.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The summer months are the sleepy season at Andran. The Azores High builds northward, pushing the storm track out of the North Atlantic and killing the long-period swell. Average heights drop to 0.9-1.0m (3ft), periods fall to 8.7-9.1s, and the wind is ideal for surfing just 13-15% of the time. NE/ENE/E winds alternate with onshore NW/NNW flow, leaving mostly small, crumbly or wind-affected surf. Summer is best saved for warm water (18-21.4°C) and a funboard rather than expecting Atlantic power.
