Bakio

Bakio delivers a remarkably consistent beachbreak that anchors the town's inviting sandy shoreline, offering both lefts and rights across its broad expanse. The sandbar configurations are in constant flux, a dynamic that on the best days can produce excellent, punchy waves with genuine barrel sections that justify the crowds. A narrow stream splits the beach, creating two distinct zones. The western side features a wide, open stretch of sand with peaks scattered unpredictably along the shore. In contrast, the eastern end is characterized by rocky outcrops that help trap and stabilize sand, fostering more reliable bank formations and often a more organized wave.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Bakio sits squarely in the firing line of North Atlantic storm systems. The average swell height climbs from 1.5m (5ft) in October to a solid 2.0-2.1m (6.5-7ft) in the heart of winter, while average wave periods hover in the 11-13s range. That combination delivers the concentrated NW/NNW/WNW energy this NNW-facing beach craves. Crucially, the percentage of ideal offshore wind from the S/SSW/SW quadrant peaks in this window, especially October's 32 percent and the 27-28 percent seen through winter. When low pressure anchors near the British Isles and high pressure builds over Iberia, southerly offshore flow turns Bakio into a clean, lined-up, slabby version of itself. This is the season for bigger boards, solid wetsuits and serious paddles.
