Mundaka

Mundaka is a dream left-hand rivermouth barrel, widely considered one of the best waves of its kind. A long triangular sandbank catches strong swells and can turn them into long, flawless tubes, with rides up to 150–200 meters possible. The take-off is steep and challenging, leading straight into a heavy barrel section and then a long, fast wall. It breaks over sand, but it can feel reef-like when it detonates onto the shallow bank.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is when Mundaka earns its reputation as one of Europe's finest left-hand pointbreaks. As the North Atlantic storm track dives south and the NAO swings into a more active phase, long-period NW and WNW groundswells roll into the Bay of Biscay on a regular basis. Average wave heights climb from 5ft (1.5m) in October to over 6.5ft (2.0m) in the heart of winter, while periods hover in the powerful 11-13s range. The critical piece is wind: southern quadrant flow (S, SSW and SW) frequently blows offshore, grooming the famous rivermouth wall. Cold fronts and pressure gradients across northern Spain bring rain and instability, but they also fire up the swell machine that makes Mundaka so special.
