Conil de la Frontera seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Conil is a winter spot. As the North Atlantic storm track gears up between October and March, the Gulf of Cadiz receives consistent, long-period swells from the WNW and W with average wave heights of 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) and periods in the 9.4-11.7s range. The dominant WNW/W swells wrap into the west-southwest-facing beach with real power, while Levante winds from the ENE/E keep many days clean and offshore. The combination of solid Atlantic groundswell and favourable east-northeast winds makes this the prime window for the best, most rippable surf of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early autumn are transitional. The Azores High begins to expand in April, pushing the storm track north and shrinking average wave heights to around 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) with periods easing to 8-9.4s. There are still plenty of clean, offshore mornings, and when a late-season low-pressure system slips down the Iberian coast, Conil can fire. Look for windows with solid WNW/W swell and light E/NE winds; the window is there, but consistency drops noticeably.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the Sahara of the surf calendar. The Azores High locks in, the Atlantic low-pressure train shuts off, and average swell heights fall to 0.8-0.9m (2.5-3ft) with short-period 6.8-7.4s windswell. Although the offshore Levante wind still blows out of the east and creates glossy conditions many mornings, the lack of powerful swell leaves Conil small and bouncy. Only the rare southern-hemisphere or Atlantic remnant will light it up; generally leave the winter boards at home and bring the groveler.
