El Frontan seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The North Atlantic storm track is at its most active during these months, and El Frontan sits right in the firing line. Average swell heights run 4-5ft (1.4-1.6m) with periods of 11.8-12.5s, and the directional focus on N, NNE, NW and NNW is strong. November and December offer the best blend of size, period and offshore wind, with December reaching a 28% ideal-wind ratio. January and February remain powerful but require more patience as NE/NNE winds compete with the good swell windows.
Fair Surf Season (October and March)
These shoulder months offer real potential but lack the consistency of winter. October is the traditional ramp-up, as the first strong lows of autumn send 11.4s groundswell while the water is still warm. March holds late-winter size at around 5ft (1.6m) average, but the ideal wind ratio drops to 12% as the Azores High starts to build. Both months reward surfers who watch the wind forecast carefully.
Low Surf Season (April - September)
From April through September, El Frontan falls under the influence of the Azores High and the resulting NE/NNE wind regime. Although north-sector swell remains present, often 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) on average, the period drops to 7.8-10.8s and the offshore wind window shrinks to 0-7%. This produces mostly cross-shore, wind-blown surf. The low-quality peak is July and August, when NNE winds blow over 60% of the time and ideal wind drops to zero to one percent. It is not a complete flat season, but it is a season for the most dedicated locals.
