Gaztetape seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Gazing along the Northern Spanish coast, Gaztetape is pure winter. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track powers up, and low-pressure systems marching toward the Bay of Biscay unleash relentless NW and WNW groundswell directly into the beach's NNW-facing pocket. Average swells sit between 1.6m and 2.1m (5-7ft) with periods of 11-13s - real, long-period energy. Critically, south to southwest winds blow offshore in this corridor, and ideal wind frequencies peak at 40-45%. This is the time to score clean, powerful, organized surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early autumn are transitional - the storms ease, but the ocean never completely shuts down. April and May average 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) of mostly NW swell with periods in the 10-11s range, while September sees the first signs of life with 1.3m (4ft) and 10.4s. Ideal offshore winds drop to 29-32%, and onshore sea breezes become more common. Still, the persistent NW/WNW direction means countless clean, rippable sessions on the small-wave days.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet period. With the Atlantic high pressure firmly established, storm-driven swell is scarce. Average heights sink to 1.0m (3ft) with periods below 9.5s. The wave rose is still dominated by NW - but it's mostly short-period, small leftover energy. Worse, north and north-northeasterly winds, which are onshore at Gaztetape, prevail, limiting clean surfs to the occasional morning glass-off. Ideal wind occurs just 18-21% of the time. For size-hungry surfers, it's a frustrating interval.
